Many individuals avoid visits to the dentist for several reasons. One of which may include the invasive nature of dental drills which are commonly used in dental procedures. Technology has come a long way to provide patients with a comfortable experience while visiting their dentist.

Drill-free dentistry eliminates the need for traditional dental drills during procedures and focuses on preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible.

Solea Laser uses a precise wavelength of light to target dental structures, with minimal heat and vibrations, providing a comfortable experience in the exam chair.

Understanding Dentophobia

Dentophobia, or dental anxiety is a common fear that affects approximately 36% of the world’s population. One of the reasons individuals avoid visits to the dentist is due to fear.

Dental anxiety refers to the anxious and uneasy feeling individuals may experience at the thought of visiting the dentist. This may stem from factors like past negative experiences or fear of pain.

Dentophobia may result in delayed dental treatments which can lead to long-term dental concerns. Visiting your dentist for routine exams and cleanings is key to maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile. These visits can help detect any potential dental concerns early for effective treatment. Delayed dental treatments can exacerbate dental concerns over time.

The sound of a high-pitched dental drill and needles are some of the most common reasons individuals are hesitant to visit dentists.

Our team at False Creek Dental has curated a comfortable, welcoming environment to help curb this anxiety. One of the ways we offer a comfortable experience for our patients is by providing drill-free dentistry.

What is Drill-Free Dentistry?

Drill-free dentistry is a valuable approach to dental care that eliminates the need for traditional dental drills and needles required in many procedures. This approach focuses on preserving as much of the natural tooth structure as possible while providing effective treatment for various dental issues.

This technique utilizes advanced technology such as lasers and air abrasion to treat cavities, remove decay, and perform other dental treatments without causing the discomfort associated with drills.

Drill-free dentistry is suitable for a wide range of patients, especially those who experience dental anxiety, have a low pain threshold, patients with special needs, or children who find dental procedures uncomfortable.

Drill-free dentistry offers multiple benefits that make it an attractive alternative for patients with dentophobia by helping to:

  • Reduce anxiety from the lack of loud noise associated with dental drills
  • Reduce pain, and discomfort, and can eliminate the need for using local anesthesia providing a needle-free experience.
  • Improve healing time and provide a comfortable and quick recovery.

This innovative approach to dental care can be used for treatments like filling cavities, removing dental decay, treating gum disease, and performing some types of preventative dental care.

Drill-free Dentistry with Solea Laser

We practice drill-free dentistry at False Creek Dental by utilizing Solea laser technology!

The Solea laser is a non-invasive dental device that uses advanced laser technology to perform a wide range of dental procedures without the need for traditional dental drills or needles. It’s an FDA-approved device known for its precision and efficiency in treating hard and soft tissues in the mouth.

Solea laser uses a CO2 laser system to deliver a precise wavelength of light to target both hard (enamel and dentin) and soft (gums) tissues, with minimal heat and vibration, reducing discomfort and resulting in minimal bleeding.

Solea laser reduces or minimizes the need for local anesthesia injections required for certain dental procedures. However, this depends on both the needs of the patient and the procedure at hand.

The duration of a procedure with Solea laser varies, but it’s typically shorter than traditional methods. After the initial assessment, the dentist will use the laser to perform the necessary treatment, such as removing decay or reshaping gums. Most procedures with the Solea laser are quick and may take around 30 minutes to an hour to complete.

The non-invasive nature of this tool provides little to no need for anesthesia, reduced pain and discomfort, and a faster recovery time compared to traditional dental procedures.

Benefits of Solea Laser Dentistry

Solea laser dentistry provides the same benefits as drill-free dentistry:

  • Greater Precision: The laser’s high-speed scanning and computer-controlled delivery offer increased accuracy, minimizing the impact on surrounding tissues, which promotes faster recovery and healing time.
  • Less Need for Anesthesia: Many procedures can be performed with little to no anesthesia which may provide a needle-free experience for some procedures.
  • No Drilling Noise: The absence of high-pitched drill noise and vibration helps to reduce dental anxiety.
  • Minimized Post-Operative Pain: Due to the less invasive nature of this laser and the reduced need for local anesthesia, patients may experience less pain and swelling post-treatment.
  • Minimized Bleeding: The laser cauterizes blood vessels, resulting in less bleeding. The laser sterilizes the area, decreasing infection risk.

Dental Procedures Performed with Solea Laser Dentistry

Solea laser can be used to perform several procedures, at reduced time, quicker healing and recovery, and reduced pain and discomfort. These include.

  • Dental Fillings: This is one of the most common ways solea laser is used. The precision of the laser helps prepare the area for dental fillings while maintaining the structure of the tooth.
  • Pediatric Dentistry: Ideal for treating cavities and other issues in children with minimal discomfort.
  • Soft Tissue Surgeries: Including gum reshaping, removal of excess gum tissue, and frenectomies with minimal scarring, discomfort, and reducing the chance of infection.
  • Other Procedures: Including activating teeth whitening treatments and treating sleep apnea-related issues.
